A former colleague overwhelms with her review of my first book!

Yes, that is what she has done: Dr Sumana Chatterjee, Associate Professor of Chemistry, has overwhelmed me with gratitude, with her review of my first book! And just imagine, after years of no communication, I simply informed her about my book, on WhatsApp, requesting her to purchase and read the book. Spontaneous was her response, thinking not even for a moment why I hadn't contacted her during those elapsed years. She purchased the book, and as she started reading it, she kept me in the loop, informing me how she was feeling and receiving the book. Her words are words of affirmation and encouragement--from a person belonging to the field of chemistry embracing the presented in, as and through the book, instead of rejecting them as a purist. Her words are redemptive! And my requests to her didn't end... As she shared with me how much she has liked the book, along with the thanks to her, I conveyed another request in reply: to review the book. She agreed to that too and today has presented a lovely, innocent, gracious...beautifully scripted review! In my wildest of imagination could I conjure such a review: a fabulous gift? No. And as she calls out, "I would like to thank her and would request her to go on supplying us with more such in-depth analysis of Life on the platform of Organic Chemistry,” I can only humbly pray: So be it. Such graciousness...she has thanked me! Now, without further ado, I beckon you all to read the following words of grace, from my former colleague and my forever friend and well-wisher.

“I routinely read books on Chemistry. I have to do so because I teach Chemistry to a lot of interested and disinterested students who have enrolled in Basanti Devi College wishing to graduate in that subject. However, I stick to my boundaries which is physical Chemistry. I rarely venture into books of organic chemistry. When a former colleague of mine informed me that she had just published a book on that subject my initial response was lukewarm, but then she assured me that there was not a single equation throughout the book and that hooked my interest. I was really interested to know how anyone can tackle such a subject without chemical reactions to represent them. Then I read the title of the book: Why Happens, What happens… It is Chemistry, in the Laboratory of Life!

Thank God it is about Life, it might be something different. I enthusiastically purchased and began reading the book.

I was not disappointed. THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT. Physics and Philosophy has gone hand in hand for a long time. Even Physical Chemistry perhaps could be interpreted in those terms, but Organic Chemistry! The reactants, the substrates, the medium, the energy requirements, the reaction mechanism, catalysis, even the individual reaction types like elimination, substitution and so on. Sushmita explored this virgin realm of finding analogies between living her life and lessons from Organic Chemistry. She did it with such an intuitive élan that like the prince of one thousand Arabian Nights we become addicted to her stories. Stories on Life being reflected in Organic Chemistry. I would like to thank her and would request her to go on supplying us with more such in-depth analysis of Life on the platform of Organic Chemistry.”

Thanks to you all as well. You all have been and are always immeasurable affirmative forces on this path and journey of life.

Love and warm regards,
Sushmita,

From Chapter 1, of the book

'Rewind and Play

Can we edit our past?

Is it possible to bring about a change in the part of our lives that we have already left behind? No matter how frantically we might want to, can we “rewind” and “play”—actually re-live the moments of life that we have already spent? No... The “past” is past. The situation with a chemical change is quite similar. It is permanent; we cannot edit it once it is done with.

But then, nothing is absolute in nature! Rather, deviations and exceptions are the norm. That is what is encountered in a chemical laboratory and in the laboratory of life as well.

Even though the past cannot be edited, it helps us deal with our “present”—and rectify, if required—so as to have a better “future.” By reverting to our past in our present with a constructive intent,  we reverse the effects in the future. Likewise, there are some chemical reactions too, that are “reversible. And is utilized the reversibility, to meet the requirements, serving the cause of the reaction, as in case of “life reactions.” When we find it to proceed in an undesirable fashion, we fashion it to move the desired way—by controlling the reaction conditions. Though, the way it is done, doesn’t fall under the purview this book, as: The intent is not to forward the technicalities of chemical knowledge (for that, text books are there), but to uphold the similarities in the philosophies governing the chemical interactions (reactions) and human interactions. Hence, only the awareness, that an outcome could be modified, suffices for our purpose.'

Beauty of hyphen! Transact or trans-act?

Hyphen is pregnant with and incubates the infinite, whether in and with its visibility or invisibility.

So trans-forms the meaning of “transact.”

“Trans,” in chemical parlance is analogous to “acronymous” situation, with identical groups of atoms placed opposite to each other attached to carbon atoms that are joined by double bonds, in the same molecular plane. “Trans” in simple terms thus comes out as “opposite.” But when I look at “transact,” there is a “trans-action” of thoughts in the mind asking: While transact pertains to conduct, as to how one deals with beings and things, how one deals with one’s own Self and thus with the world at large, does it also beckon to trans-form the act and trans-act, evolving the reactions to responses, as consciously evolving beings?

Smile and reason!

Life beckons: "Smile without any reason and then you will get the reason, as I work fully on the principle of reciprocity!"

And as life beckons, beckoned we are to acknowledge, affirm and commit: "Amen!"

From the “Author’s note” and “Introduction”

“When there is an effect, there has to be a cause, as the effect is the cause made manifest! The invisibility or imperceptibility of the cause is no proof of its non-existence. What happens, happens, that is why!”

‘What do we mean and understand when we say and hear (now quite often): “They (we) share a very good chemistry”?

Life is many things, to most, as the options provided by life are ever too many! Though, those options are not too many is the belief and thus experience, when our perspective stays closeted with the conventional, even if it has stopped to be functional. Our beliefs form our perception and our perceptions form our beliefs—and, which precedes, is difficult to declare, so intrinsically entwined they are. Yet, irrespective of the order, the action and reaction of belief and perception leads to a product, called “experience.”’

Chief Editor of Muse India graciously expresses his erudition

Dear All,

With gratitude and humility share the graciously shared by Mr Atreya Sarma Uppaluri, on WordPress.

This is what he says about the book: "Your book is unique for reasons more than one - firstly, the very concept of applying various principles of Chemistry, coupled with Psychology, to the questions and answers pertaining to life in general is highly creative and bold; secondly, it demands a reasonably thorough grasp of life; thirdly, it is a self-help book that is intended to appeal to one and all in the community. The book is also a testimony to your passion for writing, for you had quit your job as a lecturer in Chemistry, even as you continue to be in grips with your specialisation of Organic Chemistry - to transform yourself into a full-time writer cum copy-editor. Kudos to you for the visualisation of the theme and finally for its materialisation. I wish every success to your book, and I am of the opinion that every Chemistry scholar, every Psychology scholar, and every youth/adult should own a copy of your book, and use it as a medium for their own personal, academic, professional and life enrichment - apart from every educated person irrespective of their educational background."

Thanks and warm regards to him and all.

First book has been published: Why Happens, What Happens... It is Chemistry in Life's Laboratory!

Dear All,

With gratitude, joy and humility I share the news of a dream and wish-fulfillment.

My first book has been published today, on the pusblisher's—Power Publishers—portal. The other online portals too will subsequently have it.

The link, from where it can be procured: http://www.power-publishers.com/power-publishers-new-release-happens-happens-chemistry-lifes-laboratory/

The journey of and with this book began in 2006-2007...and today, it has been let loose, released for all. This book is for all. Contains no chemical equation! The book blurb conveys the crux of the book.

Those who have kids, into chemistry, they too will hugely benefit...and those who aren't in chemistry they too will enjoy. It is a tribute to the subject, chemistry, that has been my window to life's understanding.

It is all about one's chemistry with one's own self and thus with life and all—in a way, it demystifies life and chemistry. Pray that its chemistry with all thrives, and its message spreads far and wide to miles immeasurable.

Look forward to your views. Please feel free to share them freely, unedited!

Thanks and warm regards to you all. You all play significant and unique roles in this journey.

Leading and led to: Synonyms?

Yes, often I am found to muse: Whether, that which leads to something and that somethingthe led to—are synonyms? In other words, are “cause” and “effect” synonyms? Because, without one, the other cannot be. Just as without a question an answer cannot get recognition as that that it gets, an answer!

The first time this query popped out of the kernel of consciousness was when I got led to the first line of (and) lyric 1 of Songs Offering by Rabindranath Tagore: “Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure.”

The subsequent readings have evolved the initial reception, etching and evolving the perception in and as these lines (and in coming to this page, they won’t be verbatim, rather would be another evolved version!): Thou hast made me endless, as infinite is Thy humility, as Thou art Love Unconditional. Thou art all-giving, and in Thy giving lies Thy pleasure. Thy pleasure is Thy Graciousness…and all arising out of Thy infinite humility, because of That That Thou Art: All That There Is, Love Unconditional!

Since then, I am found to muse: Whether graciousness can be, in absence of humility? It is humility, leading to graciousness…and thus, the leading and the led to, co-existent, I am found to acknowledge as synonyms. And all because the ledger of consciousness registers all goodness as the germination of the Sole Reality, Love Unconditional, which, with Its infinite play has us musing, at times bemused and at times amused…yet every time, affirming: The cause enjoys a synonymous relation with the effect. The led to is there because of that that has led to it!

When “away” and “after” become “synonyms”

When the paradigm of living changes, living rendered inside-out, everything, every meaning and answer searched and found within, none and nothing is hauled, as every meaning is overhauled, thinking turned inward, one rendered introspective. It is during such a session involving a few moments—unbeknownst—that received is the momentary flash, the flash blessing with the clarity through its inherent light. Revealed is the no longer concealed: When and thus how, “away” and “after” are rendered “synonyms.”

Maybe, when faced with the contradictions, yearning to experience one’s truth and commitment, yet faced with the so-called contrasts, one wakes up to the answers as one rakes up the queries. Mind matters, as what the mind attends to, with persistence, materializes. No wonder, The Buddha’s findings revolve around mindful living, wherein the mind is full with the heart’s knowing, the mind residing outside the mind, finding the perfect abode in the heart…

In such a moment of deep query, knowing well the contradictions have been created by me, as I sought the reasons behind creating the created, blessed I am with the revelation—and yet again I am enamored by the magnanimity of the words, infinitely flexible. As the revelation dawned, its rays emanated, explaining itself: What we run after, we keep running after, as it remains elusive. Why? Because, through this “running after” we are conveying to the universe a lack and the universe responds in kind, as it is absolutely kind, unwavering its reciprocity. At the same time, what we run away from, grips us, as by this “running away from,” we project a fear, a shortfall in trust, which the universe manifests, as it never falls short of delivering the projected with persistence.

And this proceeds to unfurl the wisdom, bliss in: “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
And yet again, it leads to the affirmation of “synony-mity,” in “dynamism” and “stillness!” We strive for the intrinsic bliss, flowing as one with Life Force that courses through us and brings us to form, undeterred by the weather in the mind and outside, knowing: The mind too calms. It is about accessing that place within, the “core,” the “kernel” of stillness, being still yet dynamic, in flow as the dynamism of truth, fully surrendered to the sole “ism,” of Oneness with the Whole, the Life Force, which, with Its Presence within, ensures: Ultimately, neither do we run after anything nor do we run away from anything, fully trusting our very coming to form as Its Word of Deliverance, each one of us, Its Ward of Love!

Thus is presented: When and how, “after” and “away” are rendered synonyms.

The mystery behind “the one and only”

When we hail or haul or refer to someone as “the one and only,” what for do we do so? Yes, it is a general reference to and acknowledgment of a person incomparable, par excellence, unique. But then, are we not unique, each one of us? Each one of us, essentially, is “the one and only.” Our uniqueness lies in the subtle and not just in the gross…and even when we consider the gross, two identical twins subtly present their non-apparent uniqueness: their non-identical fingerprints!

The propagation of the saying is the unawareness of the truth in operation. The reference, “the one and only” yet again turns out to be not a limitation of this language, English, but an inference drawn not in conference with an inner knowing: “I am ‘the one and only’…you are ‘the one and only’…we all are that, as we all are one and yet unique, as all are one with The Infinite One…we all are the infinite manifestations of The One Infinite which can only express Itself as ‘the one and only’!”

When one is close, one is close but not one...

As this insight struck and dawned and allowed itself to be sighted, I also get led to recall a post, cited and shared, on July 15, 2016: “Time and Space in Oneness? C’mon! Never can it be!” And as I am led to the “time” when it was cited, led I am to acknowledge, as always: There are no coincidences, only synchronicities prevail, calling us to avail them…utilize, consciously, the ever available perfect timing in flow that timeless, flawless motion life eternal is! July 7, 2017 and July 15, 2016 might be two dates, separated almost by one year, on the calendar and on the template of our conscious consciousness. Yet, when consciousness is truly conscious, it beholds and upholds the truth: Separation is not. All is a continuum that the Reality, Oneness is. These two dates are, only for enabling us to move through this physical plane and so is the concept of time, to coordinate, navigate, and estimate our life on the physical plane!

Well, what for I entered this flow, and what all has already flowed, ever flooring with gratitude the Origin, wherefrom all flows—That, That Is All That Is—ever blessing and presenting the eternal connection with It, through these “connections” and “correlations” made, the sublime synchronicities aglow, Its unconditional reciprocity in constant flow! Each experience is “whole”—humbling, healing, fulfilling, liberating—giving one one’s sense of belonging, dissolving the longing for the experience of one’s true place in this grand tapestry that is ever unfurling and that that is being constantly weaved with the infinite threads of infinite colors of Its that we are. At the same time, as these moments pass with their effects lingering, we are found to yearn solely for these moments of communion, experiencing our truth without any pause. Each experience thus is like touching and embodying, savoring and revering the “tip of the iceberg,” no experience even coming close to the other, as each is unique, profound, uniquely profound, profoundly unique!

Such has been the insight that brought me forth to this scripting and has already brought forth the then hidden. The Invisible is ever making Itself visible and how: In ways “Wow!”

This morning, the “catalyst,” the “trigger,” the “sponsoring insight,” for which this unfurling unfurls, whispered: “When we say we are close to someone, while we are expressing our resonance with that being, we are also declaring that that resonance is not complete, as when we say ‘close,” we implicitly convey ‘there, but not fully,’ we convey a ‘gap,’ and thus, it is not a state of oneness experienced with that someone.” Yes, however much we emphasize, adding “very” to “close,” one and many, that “close” closes not the gap—illusory and in the mind—with that being, and actually, reflects a separation, conceived and experienced, within, from our true Self, from the Divine.

Yet, truth being omnipotent, it ensures that the “close” is closed, leading to a declaration: “We resonate as one. We are extensions of one another, there being no ‘an(y)-other,’ there being only one…our oneness, the singular being plural.”

Collectively, we might not have still attained that state of beholding and upholding our oneness, but we are close to closing the gap that “close” indicates!
